Hey folks, I’m wondering if it’s fair for a company to charge an employee for damages from a car accident that happened during work hours. They chose not to go through their insurance. What do you think?
It really depends on the state laws, right? What state are you in?

It’s Utah. Does that make a difference?

Yeah, definitely. In Utah, they need your consent in writing to take money for damages. Did they have any policy on that?
I went through something similar at my last job, and they charged me for damages too. I thought they had to use their insurance first.

Right? If they didn’t file a claim, can they really charge you?
Laws vary quite a bit, so it’s good to know what applies in your state. Maybe check with a lawyer?
What do you mean by ‘written consent’? Like, they have to inform you when you start?

Exactly, usually in your onboarding documents or the employee handbook.
You should definitely get some legal advice about this. Better to be cautious!
