Can I own a pet lynx or bobcat in Georgia?

I’m thinking about getting a pet lynx or bobcat. I love animals but I’m not into dogs. Does anyone know a good breeder nearby or if this is even possible? Thanks for your help!

Nope, you can’t legally have a bobcat or lynx as a pet in Georgia. These animals are regulated and can’t be kept as pets.

If you were a USDA-licensed rehabber, you might be able to take in a rescue or an injured one that can’t go back to the wild. But even then, it wouldn’t be a pet—it’s a rescue, and there are rules about how you handle and interact with them.

From what I’ve found, owning a bobcat in Georgia seems tough. They’re only allowed with specific permits, and those are for things like scientific research or fur farming—not for pets:

You can apply for a permit for scientific or educational use, or for fur farming. You need to show a significant benefit to the state and provide a study plan explaining the purpose.

Lynx are likely the same. Georgia has strict exotic animal laws. You might want to contact the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to see what’s allowed in your area.

You’re not allowed to keep them unless you’re a licensed rehabber or a USDA-licensed exhibitor.

I live close to the Georgia border, so I’ve looked into their laws before.

Haha, a pet bobcat? That’s wild.

Come on, it would be awesome!

A bobcat might be a little easier to get. Check with the Conservation Department, local zoning laws, and anyone who could give you trouble. Also, look into exotic animal laws in Ohio—you might find a cub there.
