Can payroll in Portugal be paid in cash or is transfer mandatory?

Quick question about Portuguese payroll laws: does it have to be paid via bank transfer, or is paying in cash allowed if taxes are sorted? I want to make sure everything’s done properly.

Most employers stick to bank transfers because it’s easier to manage and keeps everything transparent. Cash is technically okay, but not ideal.

Got it. Is it just for transparency, or are there other risks with cash?

It’s mainly about having a proper record. With cash, it’s harder to prove you paid taxes or met legal obligations.

You need to report taxes monthly anyway, no matter how you pay. That includes income tax and social security contributions.

Thanks. Does that mean I have to file separate reports for each?

Yeah, you’ll need to file tax declarations and social security reports every month. Both are required.

Using cash can be tricky if there’s ever an inspection. It’s better to use transfers since they create a solid audit trail.

Makes sense. I can see how transfers would save a lot of hassle later.

Most employees prefer transfers too. It’s faster and more secure for them compared to getting paid in cash.

True. I guess it’s just simpler for everyone involved.

If you decide to use cash, make sure to keep detailed records. It’s more work, but it helps cover your bases.

Good advice. I’ll definitely keep everything well-documented if I go that route.
