Can schools really search students' phones... what’s the deal?

Hi everyone… I’m really worried about what just happened with my son at school. The assistant principal searched his phone without any notice, and I can’t find anything in the school’s rules that allows this. Apparently, my son had recorded a fight but deleted it before they checked. Is this something schools are allowed to do?

That sounds really frustrating. Did they give him a reason for the search?

Wow, that’s a bit much! I thought they had to have a solid reason to go through personal belongings.

Did they find anything? It’s wild that they would still suspend him if nothing was on his phone.

I think filing a complaint is a good idea. They shouldn’t be able to get away with this.

Have you checked the student handbook? It might clarify their policies on searches.
