Can’t decide what exotic pet to get… any ideas?

I’m looking for recommendations for exotic pets. Not sure what to pick yet.

What kind of pets are you considering? What’s your living situation like? Do you have a budget in mind?

You’re leaving out some key details here, which makes it hard to help. A few things to think about:

  • What kind of experience do you have with exotic pets? Have you cared for animals like rabbits, birds, or anything beyond cats and dogs?
  • Are you willing to do some serious research? Some animals need more info than others, and you’ll need patience.
  • What’s your budget? Can you afford monthly expenses and a good vet fund?
  • Do you have access to a vet that handles exotics? Are they experienced with the type of pet you’re thinking about?
  • How much space do you have? Do you want a pet that stays indoors, or are you okay with outdoor care?
  • Do you know anyone who could help you learn how to care for a specific type of exotic animal?
  • What are you looking for in a pet? Something fun to watch? A companion? Something unique to brag about?

If you can’t answer these questions, you might need to spend more time researching before you commit to getting an exotic pet.

Do you want a mammal, reptile, or maybe a fish? What’s your budget, living space, and experience level? Also, what state or region do you live in?

Alright, I’d say mammal or reptile. Budget is $1k. I live in an apartment and I’m a beginner. I’m in Dublin. Oh, and I already have a leopard gecko.

I’m pausing my search for now but feel free to suggest something anyway.

@Lake
Sure thing. You can look into duprasi, smaller gecko species, pygmy dormice, rats, hamsters, hedgehogs, or maybe Brazilian short-tailed opossums. I’m not sure which ones are available near you, though.

If I were you, I’d focus on upgrading your leopard gecko’s setup before getting another pet.

Yeah, you’ve got a point.

I’ve made up my mind… I’m getting a hermit crab.

A hermit crab? Didn’t see that coming for an exotic pet idea.

How about bushy-tailed jirds?

It really depends on what you want. Every species is different in behavior and care. Your budget, home, lifestyle, and what you’re looking for in a pet will help narrow it down.

Are you a beginner, intermediate, or expert? And are you thinking about a fish, bird, reptile, amphibian, or maybe an invertebrate?
