I’m currently on approved LTD, and my HR team told me they’d help me find another role if my current job isn’t available when I return. But my company just had a big layoff, and I’m a bit worried. Can they lay me off while I’m still on LTD? Anyone been in a similar situation?
From what I know, being on LTD doesn’t protect you from being laid off if it’s part of a larger company-wide reduction. It’s not illegal as long as it’s not targeted at you specifically because of your LTD status.
@Mackenzie
That makes sense, I was hoping the LTD would provide a bit more security. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, unfortunately, unless it’s discrimination, they can include you in the layoff. It’s rough.
If the layoff is across the company, I think they’re within their rights. It sucks, but that’s how it works legally.

True, as long as they’re not picking you out because of your disability status, it’s probably legal.
Maybe check your LTD paperwork to see if there’s any mention of protections. Sometimes, companies have policies in place about this.
I’ve been in a similar situation. My HR said the same thing about finding another role, and thankfully, they didn’t lay me off. Hope it works out for you too!

Thanks, that’s encouraging to hear! I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
It’s tough being on disability and worrying about layoffs. Sending good vibes your way!
