Can't get proper FPS in any game... what am I doing wrong?

I have got an HP Envy 15 from 2020, and it’s packed with some solid specs: 10th Gen i7, Nvidia RTX 2060, 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, 4K display, and I’m running Windows 11 Pro. But for some reason, I can’t seem to hit 60 FPS on any game I play, even at 1080p. I’ve tried cooling the laptop, keeping all drivers updated, but nothing seems to work. Any tips on how to fix this?

You’re trying to run 4K on a 2060… that’s tough. The 2060 is starting to show its age, especially for 4K gaming. Try sticking to 1080p.

Yeah, I’ve dropped to 1080p but it’s still not performing well at all. No game I play can even stay at a steady 60 FPS

What games are you trying? Some games are just tough on laptops no matter what.

Games like Forza Horizon 5, Doom Eternal, Assassin’s Creed Origins, even Minecraft. None of them run smoothly at 1080p, which is driving me nuts!

That’s weird, especially for Minecraft. Have you checked if your GPU is overheating? Maybe it’s thermal throttling.

I haven’t kept a close eye on temps, but I did add extra cooling. Maybe the thermal paste is dried up? Could that cause FPS drops?

Yup, old thermal paste could definitely be the issue. If your GPU is overheating, it’ll throttle down to protect itself, which will tank your FPS. Might be time to reapply that thermal paste.

It could also be some background apps eating up resources. Have you checked Task Manager during gameplay?

I haven’t actually. I’ll check that next time. Maybe something’s hogging CPU or RAM in the background.

Another thing to check is whether you’re using the dedicated GPU for gaming or if it’s accidentally defaulting to the integrated graphics. That could explain the bad FPS.

Oh wow, I didn’t even think of that. I’ll make sure the games are actually using the RTX 2060!
