I have my PC connected to both a TV (in the living room) and a monitor (in another room) via a fiber optic HDMI cable. The issue I’m having is that I set the TV as the main screen, so the PC boots to that screen. But when I want to use the monitor, I have to turn on the TV, use Win+P, and select ‘PC screen only.’
If I duplicate the screens, the resolution gets messed up on the TV, making text too small to read. Is there a way to easily switch between the two without turning on the TV? Maybe a hardware solution or a program that lets me press a button or key combo to switch screens easily?
Can’t you just use Win+P with arrow keys and enter without the TV being on? Just blindly select the right option. Or you could set the TV as the secondary screen. Does it need to be the primary?
I’ve tried doing that, but it’s a bit of a hassle to do it blindly. I use the TV as the main because I mostly watch stuff on it. I only use the monitor for certain games. Even if I switch the monitor to be the primary, I’d still have to power it on to use Win+P to switch to the TV.
The issue with ‘small text’ comes from a combination of screen resolution, size, distance, and DPI scaling. There’s no quick fix—changing the settings when switching is likely necessary for the best experience. I use remote access with a Raspberry Pi for multiple screens in different rooms, but since you’re already using HDMI, this may not be relevant to you.
Some people use scripts for this sort of issue. You might want to check out AutoHotkey and set up a script to toggle between your monitors. Here’s a thread on how to do it: [link].
