I’ve been exploring SIS options for our institution and am surprised that some of the smaller, more affordable platforms lack registration permission number functionality. PeopleSoft and Ellucian had this feature years ago, and it’s proven very useful. Anyone else encountered this?

Will do. Thanks for the suggestion.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by registration permission numbers?

When setting up a course section, an admin can flag it as ‘permission required.’ This generates unique numbers instructors can give to students after meeting them, allowing them to register. Without the number, students can’t enroll.
@Nye
It’s surprising these platforms don’t support that. Maybe the sales rep didn’t know? I’d look for SISs with plug-in capabilities to potentially add it.
@Nye
What types of courses or students are you looking to capture with this?

Examples include upper-level courses where instructors need to verify students’ skills or discuss course expectations, like field work or research-focused classes. Permission numbers let instructors approve students for specific sections.

Maybe they’re referring to waitlists? Not sure.

No, waitlists are different. They work well with permission numbers to manage registration but serve distinct purposes.

Could you clarify what you mean, then?

It’s explained here.
Which systems have you looked at, and have you asked their support engineers? Large institutions sometimes restrict registration to staff-only adds, which could be a workaround.
Are you hiring an SIS admin?

No, just exploring SIS platforms at this stage.
