How can I figure out the value of these drones?

Here’s the situation. I’ve got a couple of drones I’m trying to sell, but I’m not sure how to figure out their worth. Any advice?

They definitely still have value. I’d suggest putting them on eBay and using other similar listings to decide on a starting price. Drones usually attract buyers, and after a 10-day listing, you should get a fair market price.

One thing to keep in mind: DJI drones are often tied to an account (usually by email or username). You’ll need to unbind them before selling. Search online for instructions on ‘how to unbind a DJI drone.’ If you have access to the account info, it should be manageable. Otherwise, it’s best not to sell them, as the buyer wouldn’t be able to register the drones. Hope that helps.

@Greer
I’m pretty sure the Mavic 2 models don’t require account binding, but it’s still worth confirming just to be safe.

@Greer
Thanks so much for the advice! I’ll give DJI a call to get some help. Luckily, I have access to all his emails and his phone, so unbinding should be doable once I sort it out with their support.

@Teagan
Sounds like a solid plan. Good luck!

As someone who’s sold a lot on eBay, my rule of thumb is simple: if they’re in good condition, take the original price, divide by the number of years since purchase, and then add half of that amount.

For example, if you paid $400 three years ago: $400 ÷ 3 = $133. Half of $133 is $66. Add them together, and you get $199. So, you’d list it for around $200.

For something four years old, it would be about $150, and so on.

@Sawyer
Totally agree. It’s funny how some people think they can sell used gear for the same price as brand new items from big retailers. If it’s just $100 less, I’d rather buy new.

Exactly! And with electronics, being new in the box doesn’t matter much if it’s outdated. A 6-year-old GoPro still won’t compare to the latest model, no matter how ‘new’ it is.

@Sawyer
That makes sense, but I’m stuck because I didn’t buy these drones myself. I can’t find the model info on them, so I have no idea what was paid originally or what they’re worth now.

From the look of it, they’re DJI Mavic 2 drones. Those came out about seven years ago at $800. Using my formula: $800 ÷ 7 = $114. Add half ($57), and you get around $171. Asking $200 seems fair for something that old.

@Sawyer
What if it’s brand new and unopened? Could it go for $600?

That’s what ‘new in box’ (NIB) means. If it’s an open box, then it’s ‘NOB.’

Didn’t realise that. But honestly, your formula doesn’t work for drones that are just a year old.

@Westley
Fair point. If it’s only a year old and new, you could probably sell it for close to what you paid.

Great, so I’ll sell my $400 drone for $600. Makes sense. :joy:

From the pictures, it looks like a Mavic 2 Pro on the left and a Mavic 2 Zoom on the right.

Their worth depends on what people are willing to pay. Check out actual auctions online (not the ‘buy it now’ prices). Watch a few to see how much they end up selling for.

I’ll give you $250 for them.

How about $350?

$450, final offer.
