How do you pick what stays and what goes?

Minor investment in safety gear like push sticks, ear, and eye protection, and you’ll be good to go.

Already got that covered, so I’m ready!

Keep all of it. You can make those chaos cutting boards.

I save small pieces with cool grain and use them for jewelry projects!

This is the way.

It’s all about the space you have and time to keep it organized. Eventually, you have to let some go. I start with anything that’s checked, knotty, or looks useless.

I have almost no space! My scrap pile is mostly old plywood and softwood cutoffs that I’m swapping out for better quality bits. Guess it’s bonfire time soon, but still lots more sorting to do…

@Dale
I use my small scraps for kindling. Plywood and MDF go to the trash because of the glue fumes.

@Dale
Keep a few for jigs. Most of us never use them, and they end up just taking up space.

First step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

@Sage
Ever seen those plywood end grain projects? Lol

Edit: I mean edge grain?

After a few months, I’ll go by these rules:

  • Too small for a box project? Toss it
  • Softwoods go before hardwoods
  • Anything I can replace from my stash

If you get rid of anything, you’ll probably regret it one day when you need a small piece to prop open a door or for some random fix.

It’s a never-ending question. The more you make, the more you end up with scraps. My shame pile just keeps growing.

I choose to KEEP IT ALL

My wife usually decides for me after yelling, “Why do you need all this stuff?”

I’ve never figured it out. Beavers would love my scrap wood stash.

That’s the trick. Don’t toss any of it! I hoard it all.

Keep

I’m not a turner, so I toss anything that could be a turning blank. If it’s over a foot long and 3/4 square, I keep it. One 5-gallon bucket for offcuts. If it doesn’t fit, it’s kindling.

What if it doesn’t fit in the bucket?

@Adam
Then it’s bonfire time!
