How does progress monitoring work in IEPs?

I’m trying to understand the rules for progress monitoring in IEPs. How often are schools supposed to update parents? Does IDEA say anything specific about the timing or method of progress reports?

Under IDEA, progress monitoring has to be tied to measurable goals in the IEP, and schools need to report regularly.

Thanks! Do they define how often ‘regularly’ is supposed to be?

It’s usually at the same intervals as report cards for other students, like quarterly or however often your school sends those out.

The specific section in IDEA is 20 U.S.C. § 1414(d)(1)(A)(i)(III). It talks about measuring progress and reporting it periodically.

That’s super helpful! I’ll look up that section to get more details.

No problem! It’s worth reading if you want to know your rights under the law.

If you’re not getting regular updates, you can always request an IEP meeting to discuss it with the team.

Good to know! I’ll bring it up at the next meeting if I don’t see progress reports soon.

The reports should clearly show whether your child is on track to meet their IEP goals. Don’t settle for vague or incomplete updates.

Totally agree. Some of the reports I’ve seen are so generic that they’re useless.

If the school isn’t following through, you can file a complaint with the state education agency. They’ll investigate IDEA violations.

That’s a good backup plan. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that, but it’s good to know my options.
