I’ve been unemployed for about 10-12 weeks now, filing for unemployment while waiting on an appeal. I just want to know… if I start a job before they pay me my back unemployment benefits, will I lose that money? Anyone else dealt with something like this?
I think you should still get the back pay as long as you’ve been filing each week. The benefits usually stop once you start working again though. Anyone else know for sure?
Yeah, you’re right. You should still get those weeks as long as the appeal goes through. I had a similar issue and got mine back even after I started working.
Oh good to know! Thanks for sharing. I was just worried they’d say no since I’d be employed by the time the appeal finishes.
From what I understand, unemployment benefits stop when you start working again, but anything you were owed before that should still come through once your appeal is successful. You just won’t get future weekly benefits.
Exactly! I went through something similar and got all my back pay after my appeal was approved, even though I had started a new job by then.
That makes sense. Thanks for confirming!
Wait, what’s an ‘appeal’? I’m new to this whole process.
An appeal is when you ask them to review their decision if they denied your claim. It’s basically your way to say, ‘Hey, I think you made a mistake!’ You should keep filing each week even while waiting for the appeal.
Got it! Thanks for clearing that up!
I’ve heard of people losing benefits if they don’t file during the appeal process, so definitely keep filing like you’re doing!
You’re doing the right thing by continuing to file each week. If your appeal is approved, you should get those back weeks. Good luck!
