Is a part-time MBA allowed on STEM OPT?

I’m on STEM OPT and considering enrolling in a part-time MBA program. I’d still keep my primary job related to my STEM degree, but I’m not sure about the rules. Can I legally do this without risking my visa status? Any tips or advice?

Yes, it’s possible, but your STEM job needs to stay your main focus. Make sure you work at least 20 hours per week in your STEM field.

Got it! So as long as I meet that work requirement, I should be fine, right?

Exactly. The key is making sure the MBA doesn’t interfere with your employment obligations under STEM OPT.

You’ll also need to inform your DSO about starting the MBA so they can update your SEVIS record. Don’t skip that step!

Thanks for the reminder! I’ll make sure to notify them before I start.

Pick a flexible program that won’t overload you. Balancing work and school can get tricky if your course load is too heavy.

That’s what I’m worried about. I’m looking into programs with lighter schedules. Any suggestions?

Be mindful of travel requirements. Some MBA programs include international trips, and STEM OPT has restrictions on that.

Good point! I’ll make sure to check for any travel requirements before enrolling.

Think ahead about what you’ll do after the MBA. If you want to keep working in the U.S., you’ll likely need H-1B sponsorship.

Yeah, that’s part of my long-term plan. Hoping the MBA will open more opportunities for me.
