Is this a coyote, fox, or dog spotted in Georgia, USA?

That’s a Coyota corolla

I’ve encountered coyotes many times and I’m confident that’s what you’ve got there.

Coyote, definitely.

It’s always a coyote

Definitely not a fox

Coyote. Their snoots are more pointed, and they have leaner builds compared to dogs. They also have bushy tails that taper to a point, unlike dogs. Their ears are larger and more wide-set. They keep their tails low and tuck them when running. Their eyes are almond-shaped with a slight slant, and you might see black streaks in their fur around the eyes. Their tracks are longer and more pointed than dogs’.

@Channing
Thanks for the detailed breakdown! It’s fascinating to learn these differences. Appreciate your help!

Coyotes naturally control the feral cat population, which can be beneficial for local wildlife.

Cats often hunt for sport, not just out of necessity.

That’s somewhat true for humans too, isn’t it?

@Peyton
It’s why they make such good companions for us.

You should stop feeding feral cats unless you’re also managing their health and population. But the coyote might regulate them naturally.

Most are tagged as ‘fixed’. Wasn’t aware it’s illegal to feed them. I’ll check the local laws.

@Steele
It’s not illegal in most places. Some states have regulations to ensure proper care for feral cats. Here’s a link with more information: Feral Cat Laws by State 2024. Feel free to message me if you need advice!

@Winter
Thanks! I’m already taking precautions by feeding them from my balcony. I’ll definitely check out that link.

That sounds like a good plan! Keep me updated on how it goes.

I feed only one cat at a time to avoid attracting other wildlife.

@Hadley
Our neighborhood has a problem with people feeding feral animals, attracting a variety of wildlife.

I had a bad experience with someone poisoning the food. I’ve stopped feeding them in public areas.
