I was visiting a friend’s house, and someone knocked on the door, left a note claiming they were a civil process server, and asked me to call them with a reference number. I checked their info, and it looks like their license expired in 2015. No papers were given, just that note. Is this normal or some kind of scam/intimidation? What should I do?
That doesn’t sound right. Process servers usually have to give you the papers directly or leave them with someone at your house. A note doesn’t seem legit.

Yeah, I didn’t think so either. I wasn’t sure if I should call them back or just ignore it.

I wouldn’t call. If they need to serve you, they should do it properly. This sounds off.
Their license expired? That’s a red flag right there. I don’t think they’re supposed to be doing this if their license isn’t valid.

Exactly. That’s what made me think it’s probably not legit.
I’ve heard of people using stuff like this as intimidation. If it was legit, they’d have just served you the papers directly.

That’s what I’m thinking. It feels more like a scare tactic.
@Wyatt
Yeah, sounds like someone trying to get you to call. I’d wait until they actually serve something legit.
Process servers usually can’t just leave a note like that. They need to give the papers to you directly or leave them with someone at your residence.

That’s what I thought too. The house they came to wasn’t even mine, so it all feels off.
@Wyatt
You’re right to be cautious. Just wait until they try again, and if it’s legit, you’ll get real papers.
I wouldn’t call them back. If it’s important, they’ll find a way to serve you properly. It sounds shady.

Thanks! I’ll wait and see what happens. Not going to call them.
