Running 30 VMs is crippling my internet speed

Hey everyone, I’ve been facing this issue for a while now. I have 3 PCs and 1 NAS storage device (Synology DiskStation DS224+), with each PC running around 10 VMs. I’m using Hyper-V and connecting them to the NAS device using an external network. For some reason, my internet speed is getting extremely slow, and my network load is very high. I read an article suggesting I should turn off some settings, but now I’m lagging again. Anyone have ideas?

Have you tried switching to a software switch for your VMs? It might help reduce the load on your physical switch.

What do you mean by a software switch? Is that hard to set up?

It’s basically a virtual switch in Hyper-V. You can find it in the settings, and it helps manage VM traffic without using the physical switch.

I think your NAS might be causing some issues too. If it’s handling too many connections, it could slow everything down.

That makes sense. Maybe try reducing the number of simultaneous connections to the NAS?

Yeah, worth a shot! I had to do that with mine once.

Could it be your Huawei router? They can get overwhelmed with too many devices connected. Might need an upgrade.

IDK, how would I check that? Any tips?

Log into the router’s settings. Check CPU usage and see if it’s maxed out. That could be your issue.

I had a similar issue, and it turned out I was saturating my network. Maybe look into traffic management tools?

What kind of tools do you recommend?

There are a few like NetBalancer or GlassWire. They help you monitor and control bandwidth usage.

You might want to try limiting the number of VMs you run simultaneously. It could ease the load a bit.

I know it’s a pain, but it might help! How many are you running at once?

All 30, but I guess cutting back to 20 could be a start…
