Should I go ahead with this idea?

Here’s my shopping list for a new quadcopter since I’m planning to sell my DJI FPV. Do you think the setup in the photo is good, or should I make any changes?

This will be my first time really building and customizing something like this, so I’d appreciate advice about batteries and other related stuff.

Did you mean you’re selling your FPV? Or was that a mistake?

For the shopping list, here’s what I think:

  • Get more propellers to try out different ones.
  • I don’t think the goggles you listed work with Walksnail—they might only support analog.
  • The batteries you picked are back-ordered. Look for similar options that are in stock.
  • A parallel charging board isn’t a charger; you’ll need an actual charger first.

Edit: Actually, I checked again, and the goggles should work. But double-check just to be safe.

@Arin
Yeah, I’m selling the DJI FPV. I’ve flown it before, so I know the basics, but this is my first step into more advanced setups.

  • I’ll grab a variety of propellers to experiment with.
  • I’ll find batteries that are available instead of waiting.
  • I’ll make sure to buy an actual charger.

About the goggles, I’ll confirm. I saw a video by Joshua Bardwell saying they’re HD and should work, but I’ll look into it more.

@Jordan
Sounds good! Just be aware that if you go with Walksnail, you’ll be locked into their ecosystem. Didn’t your old DJI FPV come with goggles? You could save money by getting the O3 Air Unit or a Caddx/Runcam instead of buying new goggles. The video quality might not be top-notch, but it’s still solid, and you’d avoid extra expenses. The only catch is that setting up OSD can be tricky since it requires WTFOS, and that’s hit or miss.

@Arin
I’m selling the DJI FPV, including the goggles, so I won’t have those anymore.

There are rum ours about cheaper DJI goggles coming soon. I built the Bardwell kit myself, and it’s fantastic. The video guide was super helpful. Make sure you’ve got a good soldering iron—I used the TS101, and it’s been great for all my builds.

I also upgraded to a Boxer controller, and it’s much better than the DJI FPV remote.

Once you finish the build, it’ll feel super light and responsive. It’s a lot of fun to fly .

@Remington
Thanks! I already have a good soldering iron. I might wait for the new goggles, but I’m trying to stick to the budget I get from selling the DJI FPV. The main reason I want to switch is that I’m too scared to fly through tight gaps with the DJI—it feels like it’d break easily.

@Jordan
Makes sense. That Bardwell kit is a great way to learn. I actually built it twice—once with the QAVS2 frame and then again with a Quadmula Siren F5 Split frame. It’s a great starter kit, and I’ve built a few more quads since then. You’ll definitely get the hang of it and learn how to tweak things in Betaflight.

Go for it, no reason not to .

Check out the Caddx ‘Goggles L’ as an alternative.

Are they better than Fat Shark goggles?

You should just look them up and decide.

I’ll check them out. Thanks .

Your list looks good, but I can’t see the charger you’re planning to get. Maybe spend less on the controller and invest in better goggles. The Recon is good for its price, but there are better options out there.

@Jordan
I was considering the Dominator goggles, but my budget is around $900. Also, I just realised I need an actual charger and not just a parallel board.

Go for it! The Walksnail system is great.

How does the current draw on the Walksnail VTX compare to the DJI O3? I heard some people are having issues with certain flight controllers dying when paired with the O3. It seems like a power regulator issue, possibly related to specific batches. If the Walksnail VTX has similar power needs, it might also run into problems eventually. On the bright side, some people got free replacements for the faulty controllers.

I can’t see your full list, but here are some tips:

  • Get a basic ELRS receiver and make sure your Boxer controller supports ELRS.
  • Consider buying a smoke stopper like the Vifly Smoke Stopper 2. It won’t catch every problem but can save you from some mistakes.
  • The Boxer controller doesn’t come with batteries, so you’ll need to buy those separately.

Do it and update us when it’s done .
