I got terminated today because of a failed breathalyzer test last Friday. (State of Texas). They said it’s company policy for immediate termination. I asked if they could extend my benefits past the end of the month, and they said they would consider it. I also mentioned that I might need counseling to handle losing a job I’ve had for over 16 years. It’s a lot to process. Also, I’ve had dental issues recently, so I asked if being on pain meds might have affected things. HR and my VP said no, it was all based on last Friday. Has anyone gone through something like this?
Sorry to hear about this. Definitely try to negotiate for those benefits! If you’re dealing with health stuff, they should extend them for sure.
Thanks, I’m definitely pushing for that. My dental stuff is just one more thing to worry about.
Have you considered reaching out to a lawyer? They could help you negotiate better severance or even look into if your termination was justified.
I’m thinking about it. Not sure where to start though. I guess I need to find one that handles employment law in Texas?
Yeah, getting a lawyer might help especially if you feel like the meds played a part. They can guide you through the next steps.
Man, I can’t imagine how tough this is after so long. Maybe HR can connect you with some career transition services? That could help with the job hunt.
I’ll definitely bring that up. I’m locked into a lease now too because of a promotion in June, so finding something with the same pay is stressing me out.
Do you mind me asking, what’s a career transition service?
Oh, it’s like when companies help laid-off employees with job search resources—sometimes they give you access to career coaching or resume help.
Ah, I see, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining!
Did they explain why you had to take a breathalyzer in the first place? Seems kinda random.
Yeah, it was because of ‘probable cause’ last Friday. They didn’t say much else, just that.
That sucks. If you feel like there was something fishy about the test, definitely talk to a lawyer!
Hope you’re able to negotiate a solid severance package. They should at least help you through this transition.
Thanks, I’m hoping for the best. They’re still considering the terms, so fingers crossed.
