Yeah, the gunk I’m scraping out of these threads is unreal. I swear, the guy who sold me this car should never touch tools again.

RTV isn’t the real issue here. When you have different types of metal interacting, it messes up threads. Run a thread chaser through those holes to clean them properly.

Sounds like the bolt might’ve been weak or overtightened during install. Either way, chasing threads is always a good idea on jobs like this. Saves you headaches if something goes wrong.

Also, make sure the holes are dry if they’re blind threads. Use some air to blow them out before reassembling. Liquids in there can cause bolts to break too.

Or the threads were cross-threaded. If you’ve been wrenching for a while, you can usually feel it before it fully engages. Even with old, rusty bolts, you’d notice. But yeah, not everyone is chasing threads for every bolt.
