What do you think about these dog food choices?

I have two huskies and I’m looking for some advice on their food. My female husky is on Victor Purpose Performance, and my male is eating Open Farm kibble mixed with Farmer’s Dog. He’s a really picky eater and wouldn’t touch food for days until I started him on Farmer’s Dog. I recently came across some info that Farmer’s Dog has led to pancreatitis in a lot of dogs, so I’m thinking about switching him to another fresh food. I’ve also heard some people aren’t fans of fresh food, but I can’t feed him canned food because of his pickiness. Fresh food seems to be my best option. I won’t feed Purina or Hill’s Science Diet because I’ve tried both before, and they didn’t work out. So please don’t suggest those.

If you’re set on fresh food, have a talk with your vet about possibly doing a homemade diet. They might recommend a board-certified veterinary nutritionist to help create one for your dogs. Unfortunately, there’s nothing on the market that’s perfect.

Other reputable brands to consider are Eukanuba, Royal Canin, and Iams, which are WSAVA compliant diets.

Victor and Open Farm are both good options, and adding fresh food like Farmer’s Dog can be a great way to get picky eaters like your male husky to eat.

Even though Farmer’s Dog is generally well-regarded, any food—fresh or not—can cause issues like pancreatitis if it’s too high in fat or isn’t portioned correctly. If you’re thinking about switching, you could try brands like JustFoodForDogs or Nom Nom, which offer fresh, balanced food options.

To help make your choice easier, you can use tools like FeedHealthyPet to analyze the ingredients and check out how safe and nutritious the food is. It’s a simple way to compare options.

Stick with what works for your dogs, and always check in with your vet if you’re trying something new!
