What’s the most clever thing your pet has done?

I’m always amazed at how smart animals can be! My dog recently figured out how to open the back gate all by himself. Had to dog-proof it after that  I’d love to hear stories about your pets doing something surprisingly clever!

One of our cats didn’t come back one night. We went outside calling for her and our other cat kept meowing. We followed him, and he led us right to her—she had broken her leg and couldn’t walk. He literally saved her life by showing us where she was.

Rename him Lassie.

Oh my god, the way I gasped :open_mouth::sob::heart_eyes:

Had a beagle once who learned how to unlatch the gate and get out. My current dog is a B&T coonhound. If we get separated on our morning walk, he knows to go back to the truck and lie down to wait for me.

I think I have too many stories to count. Service dogs are amazing but sometimes they use it to their advantage too, haha. My first service dog once stole my car. My second one locked me out of the house and called 911 for a big spider. She’s learned how to use money to get things at the store, and she knows simple math—she’ll paw for yes and tap the ground for no. That’s how she tells us what she wants to eat each day. She even knows right from left and how to stop and look both ways before crossing the road. I could go on, but yeah, service dogs are incredible.

How did those first two things happen?

  1. (Samoyed) I ran inside my house to grab something. By the time I came out, I saw the car driving away. I thought someone had stolen my car with my dog inside. I ran after it. Thankfully, it was in the country and there was no traffic. The car didn’t get too far—it hit a deep ditch and stopped. I ran up to the car to try and rescue my dog, thinking someone had stolen her. But when I opened the door, there she was, grinning like she’d just been on a joyride.

  2. (Rough Collie) I kept my keys on a lanyard next to the door. I went outside one day and realized I had forgotten my keys. When I went back to the door, it was locked. I thought I had locked myself out, so I checked through the window. I saw my dog sitting on my bed with the keys around her neck. That’s when I realized she had locked me out. She kept locking the door each time we tried to unlock it until we finally just barged in and knocked her over.

Oh, the 911 thing was a different story? I’m curious about that one.

Yeah, that was with the Rough Collie too. When I trained my service dog, they taught them to dial 911 if something happened to me. Well, right after she learned, the police showed up at my door, saying they got a 911 call from my number but with no answer. I told them I didn’t make any calls, and just then, my dog came running up to the cops, acting like she was in distress. She led them to the ‘emergency,’ which was just a huge spider. We all laughed, and the cops killed the spider for us. Now my phone has a password.

Can’t you still call 911 when your phone is locked?

Yeah, but my dog wasn’t taught to call it that way. She hasn’t figured that part out… yet.

So she can’t call 911 at all?

@Kim
Nope, I just decided to limit her access. I used to have a device like Life Alert that would call a family member instead of emergency services, but I broke it and never replaced it. I’m not the most responsible, lol. I even let my epipen expire… my service dog has a hard job keeping me alive. No wonder she acts out sometimes!

How does a dog even use a phone?

My dog was doing that thing where he puts the ball under the couch to make me engage. I ignored him, so he started crying and whining. I still didn’t react. Then he pretended to hurt his paw and shrieked like he was in pain. I freaked out, and once I got the ball out from under the couch, he stopped acting injured.

This morning I called my dog inside, but she just stood there, staring at something around the corner of the house. I called her again and shook her kibble, but she wagged her tail, still looking around the corner. A little while later, our old cat strolled around the corner. My dog waited for him and then followed him inside. They aren’t friends, just housemates, but my dog is so kind to him.

My cat and I played Jenga and she won.
