What treats are safe for a dog with chronic pancreatitis?

I could really use some advice. My dog has chronic pancreatitis and absolutely loves her treats, but her condition makes it hard to find ones she can handle. She only gets about three treats a day, usually after walks, but even that’s tricky to manage.

I was using Purina Pro Plan low-fat treats for a while, and they worked great. But they’re discontinued now, so I’ve been giving her a little boiled chicken instead. The thing is, her food is also chicken-based (Purina Pro Plan EN Low-Fat), and I don’t want to overdo the chicken.

She loves crunchy biscuits, but here’s the catch: anything over 3% fat triggers her pancreatitis. Even at 3%, she can’t have more than one every few days, and it needs to be tiny—like for a chihuahua. She’s an 80-pound dog, so it feels like such a small treat for her.

Have any of you found ultra low-fat crunchy treats that might work? I’d really appreciate some suggestions!

You can try making treats at home using the canned EN low-fat food. Just spread it thin on a baking sheet and bake it. It’ll be safe and probably something she’ll like.

That’s a great idea, I hadn’t thought of that! Thanks so much for sharing.

Hill’s has prescription treats that work with their low-fat diets. We use the chewy ones, but they also have crunchy versions. My dog loves them!

Have you tried Purina Pro Plan Gentle Snackers? Those might be an option.

I wish those would work, but they have a minimum of 9% fat. Her old lite snackers from Purina were perfect, but they’re discontinued now. Thanks for the idea, though!

What about Stauffer’s animal crackers? They’re low-fat and dogs seem to like them.

Freeze-dried protein treats might work. I usually get the Instinct brand from Petco or Amazon, and they have a variety of options.

You might want to consider an allergy test. My dog had chronic problems too, and we found out she was allergic to chicken. It’s in so many foods and treats, so it’s good to know for sure.
