They’re absolutely adorable! I once saw a mama raccoon crossing the street with her baby; they look like tiny little monkeys when they run! But I always keep a respectful distance, especially because of my 15 lb dog.

People keep saying raccoons are bad animals, and it really gets to me! I’m with you on this, 100%!

I totally get it. I don’t like seeing animals labeled as “bad.” Raccoons are so smart! When the mom raccoon saw me, I picked up my dog to give her space, and she seemed to understand. She even looked both ways before crossing with her baby!

Not me. I’ve been bitten twice by raccoons, and rabies vaccines are no joke.

How did you end up getting bitten twice?

How did you end up getting bitten twice?
First time, one tried getting into my chicken coop, and my dog grabbed it. I got bit trying to separate them and had to get the full rabies vaccine series. The second time, I was just sitting on a bench, and one walked up and bit my leg. Then it slashed my finger when I tried to swat it away. I’ve got a picture of it happening if anyone wants to see.
@Vic
Did your dog need the rabies shots too?
No, just a booster. My dog had it in a way it couldn’t bite her. Plus, because of her underbite, she didn’t even break its skin. I, on the other hand, had to get nine shots over a month. They inject around the wound in a circle, and the doctor hit my finger bones more than once!
@Vic
That sounds awful! I didn’t realize the shots were so rough.

LOL I was wondering the same thing!

Oh no, sorry to hear that! Are rabies vaccines really that bad?

I’ve had all three types of rabies vaccines. The ‘pre-exposure’ one I got while working at an animal shelter involves three shots over three weeks and was meant for dog or cat bites. Then there’s the ‘post-exposure’ one, which requires two shots. The third time, after the chicken coop incident, I had to get the full series—shots in both arms, both thighs, and a circle around the bite. That one caused drowsiness, body aches, and chills. Not fun but manageable. I should probably do an AMA about my experiences with animals. I’ve handled venomous lizards, raised a turkey vulture, and even have a weird fear of worms thanks to a blender incident.
@Vic
Wow, sounds like you’ve been through it all! At least you’re well protected against rabies now!

I’ve been bitten, but I’ve never had to get rabies shots. Doctors always warn about rabies, but I’m fine!
@Reagan
Where I live, rabies cases are confirmed every year, so doctors don’t take risks. Especially when a raccoon bites out of nowhere.

Totally agree!

I understand. But here in Penn State, rabies cases in animals are rare.
@Reagan
Uh, raccoons are one of the most common rabies carriers in North America. I’m guessing you’ve just been lucky.
