Is a 15g Toy Drone Still Affected by Airspace Rules?

I’m wondering if even a small 15g drone, like the Sky Viper Dash Nano, still falls under airspace rules. My neighbourhood is a no-fly zone, so I can’t fly in my backyard, right?

The closest places without restrictions are still controlled airspace, meaning I would need LAANCE approval even for such a small drone. But, I don’t need to register it, is that correct?

I followed TRUST but was still unclear about some of this.

Controlled airspace is still controlled no matter the drone’s size.

That said, it’s very unlikely anyone will come after you for flying a toy in your own backyard, as long as you keep it low.

Fly responsibly and don’t ruin it for everyone.

@Sky
Thanks for clearing that up. I’m trying to be responsible, which is why I did some research before flying. I found out about TRUST, which I completed. It surprised me that there’s no mention of these rules on the box or in the instructions. I bet most people just go out and fly without thinking about it.

When you say no-fly zone, do you mean a 0 ft LAANC zone?

I can’t even fly my DJI Mini 4 Pro in my yard or house because it’s near the 5-mile radius of the airport. I used to fly my Phantom 4 all over the place from my house a few years ago.

Which airport? The 5-mile rule isn’t enforced anymore, and you can likely get LAANC approval at that distance.

No one will care if you fly a small toy in your backyard or park. It doesn’t go too high or far.

Still technically illegal.

What I really want is a space like a gym, somewhere big enough to make mistakes without hitting a wall, but indoors, so the 15g drone isn’t just tossed around by the wind.

@Vesper
Exactly. If you’re indoors, you can do whatever you want.

@Vesper
Just buy a couple of them. We have the same ones, and my kids fly them inside all the time. They crash into walls sometimes or get tangled, but they’re so light that it hasn’t been a problem.

Same here. They survive crashes pretty well. The reason I want more space is because it would help me learn to fly. Right now, there’s no room to make a mistake and learn from it—it’s just crash and repeat .

So is sleeping in a locking refrigerator…?

@Hollis
I’m not telling anyone what they should do, just that it’s technically illegal.

If you said I shouldn’t sleep in a locking refrigerator, I wouldn’t argue with you.

@Vesper
I’m also not telling you whether or not sleeping in a locking refrigerator is legal or not, just to be clear.

I feel you. I live three blocks from an old grass farmer’s landing strip, used maybe twice a year, but it’s still a no-fly zone. I just drive to a nearby park so I can fly without worrying.

Really? Are you sure there’s no other airport or restriction nearby? I live near a municipal uncontrolled strip that gets around 25-50 movements a day, and it’s just an Enhanced Warning Zone.

@Dakota
FYI, ‘Enhanced Warning Zone’ is DJI’s term for their geozone system. It’s unrelated to FAA-controlled airspace.

Exactly, that’s why I mentioned it. I fly by that airport all the time.
